The photo above shows both the lenticular cloud and corkscrew rotor cloud which forms downwind of a mountain range in an amazing phenomena called lee wave, where the entire atmosphere bounces off the ground, often with multiple bounces with a period of a few miles.  This powerful (and sometimes hazardous) phenomena has taken glider pilots to altitudes of over 50,000' and allows for flights in excess of 2,000 miles in a day.  (Sierra Nevada and White Mountains, Bishop CA 2014)
